Watch Out. After all it is a third world country!!

Did you know that Thailand is classified as an emerging or developing country. Or perhaps a Less Developed Country (LCD). In older terms a third world country. Now a lot of people hear the term and don't really have an idea. Countries in Africa? Well probably most are third world right. Except for the oil rich arab nations. What about Asia. Viet Nam, Cambodia, Thailand. Are these countries still considered third world. Well the answer is yes. And Thailand is in that group.
Of course a lot of expat locals will tell you there are two countries here. Thailand and Bangkok. Very different. Those that have been here and gone home now will tell you that outside of BKK it is very basic. Primitive might be a word. I have even heard backward. Meaning how it was back then for all of us, before the good old days I guess, back before things changed or started to change.
So when you come here watch out. You have stuff. Third world residents don't. Like all humans third world parents want to advance the position in life of their children. Maybe have them go to school and stuff. So some parents will do as much as they can to get ahead. Even a lot of ordinary people will do as much as they can to get ahead.

We have had the experience of a visitor getting caught in a jewellery scam that is run daily on the streets of BKK. There are many people involved in these scams and we have all met them in one form or another. Sometimes ignoring them Sometimes not. Here is how the thing works.
A tout will be on the lookout at popular tourist spots like the Grand Palace, various temples and other heavy tourist attractions in Bangkok. (The scam is often initiated by a tuk tuk driver.) The tout will be dressed as a student or gentleman and will approach the mark. The tout, taking advantage of the Thai people's reputation for friendliness, may strike up a conversation, asking where the mark is from, and if this is his first time in Bangkok. The tout will tell the mark that a certain (insert item here because the good redirection artists represent more than one commodity) jewellery store offers a great sale today or that they know the owner, etc. They supply a business card for the store and will even arrange transport to the store. Once there the heavy sales pitch is on. The big issue is that the gems/antiques/etc. are not worth anything near the stated price. Or to the well negotiated lower price you achieve.

Our story starts with a well dressed gentleman approaching our visitor while he was poking around downtown. Just getting a feel for the city. The gentleman engages him in conversation and after finding out that gems might be something he would be interested in, directs him to a jewellery store that he happens to know that has a grand sale on this week.
In our case the gems were not worth what was paid. But our visitor was relentless. He got an independent gasp of horror when he stated the price paid and knew he had to get satisfactory resolution. So off he went, business card in hand. Not really knowing where the place was but he was off.
Here is the interesting part of the story as he told it to us.
"So I was standing on the street looking at this business card and trying to figure out which way to the store when this young fellow walks up and asks me if he can help out. (Now folks, in our minds eye we see him standing about twenty feet from the actual spot that the first gentleman approached him!! Do you watch Dr. Phil. The world is full of clues!! We are listening to the story and saying to ourselves, holy mother of pearl, he got caught a second time as near the scene of the crime as you can get!!), But wait.
Our visitor tells the young fellow the story of being scammed. It turns out the young fellow was a tourist guide and when told the story he was aghast, horrified. He took the business card, hailed a cab and took our visitor to the store. Once there he scolded the owners telling them "You are everything that is wrong with  scammers in BKK. You give all Thai people a bad name". To which the store owner opened up and explained the business arrangement he had with the gentleman and the tuk tuk drivers. You will get a discount on price of 40% immediately if I get to cut out the middle man they said. But I have to pay these guys for bringing you here or else I go out of business.
Bottom line our visitor gets back all but 90% of his money. They called 10%  a restocking fee. We call it a BKK Street Tax. Only a few pay it but enough so that we all don't have to! Others pay way more because they are too embarrassed to go back or more specifically don't have a Thai person helping them.
I consider our visitor to be vely vely lucky perhaps even blessed, that he met a second person who was a gentleman and helped him get rid of a nasty mark on his vacation.
Hey remember Hill Street Blues??  ............ be careful out there!
So enjoy the friendly Thai people when you come here. Smile and they will smile back.

Lena in the House

The day that we have all been waiting for. Lena arrived last night. Couldn't have made Deeds and I happier. What a treat it was to see her smiling face come through the doors at BKK airport.
Halifax - Toronto - Tokyo - Bangkok.
Left at 7:45 am Thursday Atlantic time. Arrived in BKK at 10:15 am Atlantic time on Friday. 26 1/2 hours of travel to come and see us and our place in Bangkok.
Standing on the deck looking out at the skyline at midnight BKK time on Friday night she said, "It's like a dream. I cannot believe that I am actually standing here right now."
Needless to say we chatted as much as we could about school, the future, August and many other things that were going thru our minds after finally being a family again. It's only been since Christmas but still we were so glad to be back together.
Lena's big travel story had to do with none other than the piano case. Yes the infamous piano case. I had thought that monkey was off our backs and filed into the archives of time. But ohhh nooooo. Not yet.

As it turns out this is the mother of all cases. Lena found this out when she went to pick it up a few weeks ago in Halifax. Ordered a cab to take her and the case home. Nope. Wouldn't fit into the cab. WILL NOT FIT IN A CAR!! It is that big.
Of course we never thought much about this because we transported the keyboard home a few years ago in the Prius. Fold down seats don't you know. Carry  eight sheets of plywood, box of nails and various electric power tools as well. Big big. So when Lena told me she needed to order a van to get the case home I knew there was a story in this thing still.
So Lena did her homework starting with a question to me, "Are you sure that the piano case is the same as a second suitcase?" "Oh for sure, and you are allowed two suitcases on international flights so don't worry" said I. Well not so sure she kept on digging. Found out that over sized articles are extra charge. No problem I said, we need to get your piano out of Halifax and getting it here where you will be next fall is the best thing to do.
So she soldiered on. Prepared to pay the extra cost of bringing the oversize article to BKK. Lena ordered a van to get to the Halifax airport on Thursday morning. Upon arriving at the check in counter the attendant promptly told her that the case was indeed oversize and a fee would apply. However Lena was notified that the case was also overweight. Total weight allotment is 32 kg. Piano and case = 33 kg.
Lena was prepared to pay for this but alas the attendant said No can Do. Cannot be overweight. Best you bring the case to AC Cargo, on the other side of the airport. Staff may or may not be there at this hour of the morning, not sure when they start. "How would I get there" she enquired. "You might be able to catch a cab out the front door" says he. "And make it out there, check the case into cargo, catch the cab back all in time to catch my flight" says Lena, "Which leaves for international connections to Bangkok in 37 minutes?"
The attendant was nonplussed so Lena did what only a girl can do in these circumstances.......... she turned on the water works. The attendant felt a warm spot for her and said, "Well I could call to find out if they may allow this overage just this once" (He of course wasn't sure if Air Canada had ever allowed anyone to break a rule by using their own head to figure something like this out on their own!)
The call went like this: "Morning Albert, I have a situation here where a passenger has brought in a piece of oversize luggage and it turns out that the item is also overweight. Uhhhh, 33. Uhhh OK.". Click.
"Yes we would be allowed to take the case."

Ya gotta see poor Lena dragging this case through the airport. When she saw us she gave one wag of her head at me, like get your self over here and take this thing off my hands I am dieing. It is big, and awkward and heavy. Now I know why rock bands have roadies. Holy Mother of Pearl. And you shoulda seen the look on the face of our airport driver when he saw me drag this thing out towards him. "Vely vely big big luggage" he said.
Hopefully sometime today Lena will play a tune for us. It sure would make this place seem like home to Deeds and I. To hear Lena play the piano in our house is life itself. It is so simple and ordinary. It describes many evenings, or after school, coming in the door after holiday dinners out or special occasions but most importantly is sounds like normal. Normal to us. A background sound, a warmth we have come to appreciate. It sounds like home. Very cool for us to be able to have that here in BKK. Soooo lucky.

Deeds and Lena are off for a mani and a pedi this afternoon. I am joining them after their waxing for a foot massage.

Peggy and Paul have been with us now for a week plus. It has been awesome. Fun. Adventurous (blog on this to follow). Great. We were so lucky to have them added in as part of our visitors. They go home tonight at six. They have done alot. A trip up to Chang Mai. Clothes. Palace and Temple. Out and about. And oh yeah I did mention an adventure that I will blog about later.

Shelly and Carolyn returned from Chang Mai this morning and are now back in the house for a few days before they head for some serious beach. Krabi I believe. Lena, Deeds, Shelly and Carolyn will go to the floating flower market tomorrow morning. I will tell all in a subsequent blog.
Me, well I have been invited to a chili chow down at Xbox Bar.
Chili is provided by Bob, he is Canadian. I am sure you all know Bob who makes chili. Did I tell you he was Canadian?
I played golf on Wednesday at BGC and the foursome I joined were a group of elderly gentlemen, yes ok, about my age and we had a heck of a time. In the course of the round they invited me to show up at what is probably a weekly affair. Good way to meet people and you never know you might hit it off with someone. Have a buddy to do some things with. It is necessary and I am going to give this some effort to make sure I have more than one group of people to hang with at the course and elsewhere as necessary. Not easy thing for men to do, make friends and nurture relationships. I am guilty and therefore need to be more mindful of this. So far so good.

So a week with my daughter around Bangkok. A little shopping is definitely on the agenda. We will go out with Shelly and Carolyn tomorrow as Deeds heads back to work. Much to do and show her. We asked her what she wanted to do and she said "Don't ask me, tell me what I am doing. I will do it all."

Tonight we will probably go to Suda for beerz and some good thai food. Four ladies and me. Honestly that is why old guys like me come to Bangkok in the first place. It's wonderful. Try it.

The Heat of the Visits

Well folks, especially for those of you not into coming to Thailand to visit Hostel D&J as it has been coined, this is the peak of the excitement. We will have four visitors in the house on Saturday. A festive Rice Barge dinner cruise planned for the evening. The head count last night was three, only for one night, as Brad and Leah came to town in preparation for their return flight to Halifax.
Their arrival has caused our Project Group to have a review meeting to assess "Our Successes" and "Things We Can Improve On". The review has resulted in the Operations Team realigning resources for visitor arrival. It appears that the outsourced group used to collect and deliver the guests to Hawaii Tower have a problem fulfilling their mandate. It appears that this breakdown in communication is brought on by exactly that. We can't communicate to the local cab drivers. The collected Brad and Leah successfully from the Airport Express train at Makkasan Station but were incapable of finding our Soi and therefore resulting in additional cash outlays by our patrons to said outsourcing organization. Unacceptable.
Operations acted quickly in cancelling any future transactions with said organization. A new Process was crafted forthwith and utilizing the approved templates and methodology. The new Process is now operational.
Which really means that we are going to use our driver to go to the airport to pick up new arrivals. He earns a little extra cash instead of the cabbie and you get to see a familiar face at the airport. You will be wisked away directly to D&J's. No fuss no muss.
So just so you can keep your list of visitors straight this is how it is. Paul has been in the house since Wednesday. He arrived about 40 minutes after my brothers flight departed BKK for Calgary. His wife Peggy arrives on Saturday morning from Australia. Shelly and Carolyn are being picked up as I write this.

Golf is back in the news for me. I am striving to play three times a week at a minimum. So far so good. I will also take a mini golf lesson at a local hi-tech golf shop next week to try and improve the game a little.
I have hooked up with a group at BGC that has a regular tee time around 11:15. No need to book a time anymore as these guys have a standing time for two groups (up to ten golfers) in that time slot.
Mostly Americans that are living in BKK. Retired, or just tired of living anywhere else. Some still run their businesses at arms length but it seems to be a good fit for me for now. I play every Monday and Thursday with this group and Wednesday on my own. I also have a few invites from within the group to play other courses that they are members at, so there is a little variety offered. They have an outing coming up for Pattaya, the date keeps moving around but it will be come together and I will get to play some of the nicer courses in Pattaya. Cool

Here's the thing. In Thailand you can be anyone. Anyone you want to be. It's kinda like Vegas ya know what I mean. No one knows who you really are and with a little money, some talk............... you can be anyone you wanna be.
I have a story about a gentleman I met here and I am looking for the right way to say it, or spell it out to you. But first I need to do a little more digging because it sounds so over the top that it may be true. I want to see if I can find out more. Could be the biggest 7 degrees story every told by this rugged adventurer. More to come.

Deeds is off to pick up Shelley and Carolyn at the airport using the above noted process in a few minutes. So we will end up out on the deck later tonight, wine glasses in hand. (Yes we will raise a glass for you Tammy).
We are both anticipating a great couple of weeks. Wow this is going to be fun.
As you can see we also upgraded the ol beanery with the addition of some great deck chairs. Makes the wine quaffing so much easier. Hehehehe.
